M&M Environmental Group in Conway laid off 200 of its 250 employees Friday morning after its majority client, Southwestern Energy (SWN), informed  management that the company is no longer allowed to provide services.

“It’s a sad day for Faulkner County,” said Sam McFadin, CEO of M&M Environmental. “The vice president and president at Southwestern Energy’s corporate location in Houston did not consider the magnitude of the effect this would have on our employees.”

Employees affected by the layoff poured into M&M’s Conway location at Enterprise Avenue on Friday morning, returning their vehicles and uniforms and collecting their final paychecks.....

....Guerin said SWN cited safety concerns following a recent accident involving a M&M dump truck that overturned on Hwy 64 in Vilonia, spilling 15 tons of reclaimed oil.

“The accident was terrible, and it shouldn’t have happened, but we got out there and cleaned it up,” he said.

The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality added M&M to its list of first contacts for cleanup of spills.

“They were highly impressed with the cleanup,” McFadin said. “That should have taken a month or two, and we accomplished it in eight hours.”

He said M&M’s trucking division, one of eight divisions, makes up only about 10 percent of the services the company provides.

Other companies that do business with M&M are also likely to be affected by the layoff, Guerin said.
